Orange Shirt Day... Every Child Matters

The staff and students participated in Orange Shirt Day to recognize the Indigenous communities that were impacted by the residential school system. We had a special guest, Elder Sydney Courtepatte of the Michel First Nation, come speak to the students and give them a special presentation.

In class, we read a few stories about the residential school system and Indigenous culture. The students also created their own orange shirts after writing a few sentences about why they matter in this world.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week we started reviewing long vowels by working with words with the "magic e". The students changed short vowel words into new words by adding the "e" (cap=cape) and then were asked to sketch the new word.

We continued working on our fall paragraphs. The students added details and descriptive words to their sentences. We brainstormed a variety of sentences that could be used for a conclusion and then they picked one to write on their red "stop" sentence strip. After completing their rough draft, they worked on typing a good copy. They were taught how to spell check and were asked to edit their work for proper capitalization and punctuation.

The students also continued the SLA (Student Learning Assessment). They worked on the literacy performance task and the digital interactive questions. I attached the link in last week's blog if you would like to read more about this assessment.

Cursive practice this week was the letter Dd. It is a tricky letter to form but the students did a great job!

MATH

We continued working on distinguishing the difference between increasing and decreasing number patterns, finding the gap to extend the pattern and solving word problems.

SCIENCE

The students added to their lapbook after reviewing the definitions of opaque, translucent and transparent. We also watched a few videos about the rock cycle and talked about how the three rock types are linked before adding the diagram to their book.

We completed some soil investigation, finding organic and inorganic materials within their sample. They sure enjoy being "scientists" and take the job very seriously!

ART

The students started creating their pet rocks! This week they painted their base coat and added details. Next week, they will add the finishing touches such as googly eyes, feathers and pom poms.
