Happy Holidays!

Well, we had a very busy but exciting last week before the holidays! Our trip to the Devon Public Library was amazing. Mrs. Becker met us for a tour of the library, a special Olaf craft and we were treated to four wonderful Christmas stories! She even had a special package for everyone before we left.

The students were excited to have our own "Cookie Decorating Challenge" in 3B! They all did a wonderful job and ended up with some beautifully decorated cookies!

Thank you to all of the parents who contributed to our 3B Christmas Brunch! Most of the students enjoyed seconds and even thirds!!! :)

Mr. Coffin and Mrs. Kloschinsky treated the students to a viewing of the "Polar Express" in the gym on Friday afternoon. The students hauled in their favourite blankets, stuffies and got cozy with their best buddies.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The students announced their "Reindeer of the Year" auditions that they completed last week. They were all creative reindeer with very unique talents.

This week we completed activities based on the story "Polar Express". After listening to the online book read by Liam Neeson, we discussed a few vocabulary words and the students tried to describe the meaning by using context clues from the story. Then the students were taught how to use a dictionary to find definitions and were given six vocabulary words to find.

They also completed a story elements chart as we discussed the characters, setting, problem and solution.

The students were given a STEM challenge for the Polar Express. Using 10 straws, cardstock and tape, they were asked to design a maze to get their silver bell from the North Pole back to the little boy in the story.

The students were quizzed on their comprehension by completing multiple choice task cards that were placed around the room.

We had our last week with Sam, our elf on the shelf. The students did a great job thinking of different verbs everyday to describe what our little friend was doing. This week our elf treated the class to hot chocolate and mini marshmallows.

On the last day, Sam returned our Santa letters from the North Pole! The students were so excited to read Santa's replies and share their letters with classmates.

MATH

This week, the students were given a Math Mystery, called "The Selfish Elf" to solve. They completed questions to demonstrate their understanding of place value, addition and telling time. A clue was given after each activity to help them cross out elves from a list of possible suspects!

SOCIAL

As a class, we made a chart to compare India to Canada in regards to schools, transportation, government, celebrations, etc. We also read a book of journal entries from a little girl who went to India for a vacation. The students completed a review by playing a game of Kahoot on the chromebooks and then they were asked to create a concept map by choosing at least three topics to include on their web.
