LANGUAGE ARTS
Each week, the students will be writing in their Journals. This is "free" writing time, meaning they can write about whatever they choose. It could be about their weekend, something they are looking forward to, a memory or they can even write their own story. They are encouraged to write at least five complete sentences and use their phonetic knowledge to try and sound out words. If they find the word too tricky to sound out, they can use their personal dictionary that they keep in their desk.
We made another class book this week, based on "The Important Book." The students wrote sentences, describing three important things about them and then illustrated their pages.
The Making Words activity this week included the letters i, o, a, m, t, t, p, r, n. They did a great job creating a lengthy list of words and discovering the mystery word... IMPORTANT!
We started cursive writing this week. The students tried really hard to do their very best!
Math
This week the students worked on extending number patterns by adding the same number and solving word problems using number patterns.
We started Mad Minutes this week! The students began with adding 1. Each week they will add the next number until we reach +10. They are given 2 minutes to complete 30 questions. Their goal is to complete more questions than the day before or complete them in a shorter amount of time.
The students learned a new math game called "Cover Them Up" to help with their addition and subtraction skills.
SCIENCE
This week, we learned about the four layers of the Earth; crust, mantle, outer core and inner core. We completed a reading selection, highlighting important information. The students added to their lapbook and made 3D models!
They also added a section about how rocks and minerals are different. They are really enjoying daily ROCK TALK and answering questions about the properties (shape, luster, colour, etc.).
ART
The students started working on a project by painting a rainbow. On each of the sections, they will think of characteristics that describe themselves. We will be brainstorming a list and finishing their artwork next week!
