Rock Walk!

We had the most beautiful fall day to enjoy our Rock Walk down by the North Saskatchewan River. The students probably could have stayed all day, looking for rocks with different properties. They searched for rocks with different shapes, colour, luster, and textures. Some of the students even noticed rocks that were translucent. They were asked to bring back two for testing and one to create a "pet" rock but they were so excited that most of them collected entire ziploc bags full!





LANGUAGE ARTS

This week, our book study was on "The Invisible Boy" by Trudy Ludwig. I have attached the link to the online story so that you can enjoy it. The author has some wonderful messages!




After reading the story, the students answered questions and talked about what they learned. They also worked on a story map, writing and drawing pictures about what happened in the beginning, middle and end.


This week, we started reviewing short vowel sounds. The students made charts and added to their new Reading Notebook by compiling a word list with those sounds. 


As a class, we brainstormed adjectives or personality traits. The students chose six characteristics to complete their Art project. They did a wonderful job and really put a lot of thought into the words they picked. 



The students worked on more cursive writing by completing the letter "Cc". 


MATH

This week, the students worked on finding the difference between numbers by counting backwards. They were given tools such as number lines and hundreds charts to assist them, if needed. They also extended patterns by subtracting or skip counting backwards and solved word problems.



The students also learned a new domino game called, "End to End" to help them with their basic facts. 


SCIENCE

This week, we learned about the different properties and how we use those to test minerals within rocks; shape, hardness, luster, colour, magnetism, smell, feel and if light can pass through the materials. They added this information and definitions to their lapbook.
