Winter Walk Day

We sure lucked out with beautiful weather for Winter Walk Day! All of the students and staff at RBES enjoyed the exercise with friends. A BIG thank you to the parents who came out to walk with us and to the Town of Devon for providing the hot chocolate.

TEACHER'S PET CODING SESSION

The students spent the morning learning about coding and practicing in a variety of ways. Then they had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills by programming a robot mouse through different mazes. They had a lot of fun with this hands on learning experience.

LANGUAGE ARTS

This week's writing was based on the book "In My Heart" by Jo Witek. This book uses adjectives and descriptive phrases to portray feelings in our heart. After reading the book we had a class discussion and brainstormed all of the emotions we feel. 

The students each picked two feelings that they wanted to illustrate and describe on paper. They were asked to think about the colour they would use, what their face would look like, an animal that reminds them of that emotion, what the weather would be like and what happens to their body while they feel this way. 

Using their sketches and idea pages, they worked on organizing their writing into a paragraph. They all really dug deep to come up with some great descriptions about the emotions they picked. Stay tuned for their final writing projects next week!

MATH

We started working on subtracting two digit numbers, without regrouping. The students were reminded to put the bigger number on top and make sure their ones and tens columns were stacked properly.

SCIENCE

The students learned about animal hearing by watching videos about frogs, elephants, bats, owls and dolphins. While watching the videos, they were asked to pull out important information and create webs for each animal.

We watched a few videos about the different instrument families and then the students had a blast making their own Kazoos! We talked about how the sound waves are made and how the pitch and volume can be changed. 

To help the students prepare for their unit test, we played a few rounds of the online game KAHOOT!

Bake Sale to help Australia!!!

The Grade 3 fundraiser was a HUGE success, raising over $1200 for the Australia Wildfire Fund. All of the students should be so proud of themselves for helping this organization. The time they put towards making posters to advertise the event, brainstorming items to sell and helping their parents with the baking will be truly appreciated. WAY TO GO, GRADE 3s!!!

The students loved the Crazy Hair Day to celebrate school spirit at RBES! Some of the students came to school with absolutely amazing hairdos!

LANGUAGE ARTS

The students worked hard to finish their Australian Animal Research project. They had the opportunity to share their Google Slide presentations with our class and other grade levels around the school.

We reviewed parts of a paragraph; topic, details and concluding sentence. Choosing from a variety of sentence starters, the students wrote about their "Most Perfect Snowman" to go with their paper project from last week. Then they were asked to read their paragraphs aloud to themselves to check for capitals, punctuation and spelling.

The students enjoyed some buddy reading with their peers. They read a non-fiction passage about sea creatures.

They are also working through a chapter book with a small group during our daily reading block.

We continued working on editing sentences using CUPS (capitalization, understanding, punctuation and spelling).

MATH

The students were excited to complete a "How Many Ways" activity for the number 676. They are getting to be experts at breaking apart ones, tens and hundreds.

We learned a new math game to practice regrouping with 3 digit numbers. The students were put into pairs and given counters, a deck of cards and a whiteboard. Each student picked up 6 cards and arranged them to try and get the largest sum from adding two 3 digit numbers. They used the whiteboard to add their numbers and show regrouping. The player who ended up with the largest sum won the round and picked up a counter. The first player to win ten counters was the champion.

SCIENCE

We continued learning about decibels and the students sorted quiet, moderate and loud sounds. They also worked on a Google Slide presentation; finding pictures of things that would represent different decibels.

They explored different decibels around the school using a decibel meter app on the IPads. They had a lot of fun wandering around the school and checking out how many decibels each room was. Mrs. Horrocks even screamed as loud as she could to see how many decibels she could get to! 

The students had the opportunity to explore sound centers. At each station, they were asked to record answers to a variety of questions demonstrating their knowledge of pitch and volume.
